Hear a stream go wrong, as it happens
This listens to a stream and raises an event the moment it knows: a gap in the audio, clipping, speech that drops in level, dead air, mains hum. Each event carries the reason in plain words and the numbers behind it, so you can see why it fired. Use your microphone, play a recording as if it were a live stream, or run the demo, which has one of each planted at a known time.
What it can and cannot tell you
- Every event is a signal, not a diagnosis. The status of all of them is signals: none of these detectors has been validated on live streams yet.
- A gap, clipping or dead air is known within a fraction of a second. A drop in level or a hum takes a few seconds to be sure of, because speech pauses on its own.
- A level drop is measured on the loud parts of the speech against their usual level. It can still fire when a television or a second voice fills the pauses.
- It reads one channel. A stereo file is mixed down to mono first.
Privacy and the microphone
- Your audio is never uploaded. It is processed in this page and closing the tab ends it. Nothing is saved unless you press "Save this session" while signed in; then only the events and their numbers are kept, never audio.
- The microphone is taken raw, with echo cancelling, noise suppression and automatic gain off, because those would remove exactly what the monitor is there to see.
- A file is played as a stream, 20 ms at a time, and can be run faster than real time. Files up to 60 MB.
